HEATHS and HEATHER
Heathers are easy care evergreen plants that can provide
year round color in your garden. Carefully selected,
you may have varieties in bloom every month of the year.
Foliage color increases the year round color options
and includes shades of green, grey, gold, yellow, orange,
and bronze. Flower color ranges from white, pink, red,
and purple.
Heathers grow best in full sun and
can tolerate partial shade. Plants grown in shade will
not flower as well and may become leggy. Most varieties
grow best in well drained, slightly acid soil. The addition
of peat moss when planting and as a mulch is beneficial.
Heathers are often planted in groups
to provide mass color effect but can be used almost
anywhere in a garden as a low hedge, in a rock garden,
as a border, or edging to companion plants like rhododendrons,
azaleas, dwarf conifers or shrubs. They are very useful
in raised beds or containers but must never be allowed
to dry out.
